Marcus, curly-haired king,
brother to Ramona, who would be beautiful.
We were four and five: nine of us together
kept alive by one mother.
Every day a rubber shoe kicked me on the head,
Ramona called me from my bed--
Marcus grinned above me,
by day they came to love me.
They are not my color, they're the color of my mother.
I am not her color, I am the color of their mother,
who is not their color--
did we come from something other?
I sleep in as children leave their parents for mine.
Over my bed, Marcus' rubber shoe swings above my head.
Light cracks into my lids, alien beams.
Whose children wake me, that share my
plastic birds, water in their bellies,
whistling in sunny corners, begging for kisses, stealing bites
in warm damp cotton,
tearing through corridors and gardens
so fast we drink the air, crying like bells,
sheltering our adoration?
